In Portland's climate, gutters are not optional trim details—they are a critical moisture-management system. A gutter system that is improperly sized, improperly sloped, failing at the joints, or pulling away from a rotted fascia board is directing every inch of Portland's 37 annual inches of rainfall toward your foundation, your siding, and your wall framing. VResh Construction installs seamless aluminum gutters and repairs or replaces the fascia and soffit systems they attach to — because a new gutter attached to a rotted fascia board is a short-term fix at best.

Gutter and Exterior Trim Services

Seamless Gutter Installation and Replacement

We install seamless aluminum gutters, formed on site to the exact length of each run — no seams except at corners and downspout outlets, which is where most sectional gutter leaks occur.

Sizing: Most Portland homes require 5-inch K-style gutters. Homes with steep roof pitches, large roof planes, or complex roof lines often need 6-inch gutters to handle the volume of water generated in a heavy Portland rain event. We size gutters to the actual roof catchment area — not one-size-fits-all.

Slope: Gutters must be sloped toward the downspout at approximately 1/16 inch per foot of run. Improperly sloped gutters allow water to stand, accelerate corrosion, and promote mosquito breeding and overflow. We set the slope correctly on every run.

Hangers: We use hidden hanger brackets spaced every 18–24 inches—not the spike-and-ferrule method common in older installations, which gradually pulls out of the fascia over time.

Fascia and Soffit Repair and Replacement

Fascia boards — the horizontal boards along the roofline that gutters attach to — are among the most moisture-exposed wood on any home. Failed gutter caulk, overflowing gutters, and ice dams all allow water to run behind the gutter and saturate the fascia. Rotted fascia boards are extremely common on Portland homes where gutters have been deferred for maintenance.

We do not install new gutters over rotted fascia. We replace compromised fascia boards first, then install the gutter system on sound material. This is the only approach that gives the installation a reasonable service life.

Soffits — the underside panels of the roof overhang — are also susceptible to moisture damage, particularly at the vent openings. We repair or replace damaged soffit panels and ensure all soffit vents are clear and functional.

Exterior Trim Restoration and Replacement

Exterior trim — corner boards, band boards, frieze boards, rake boards — takes sustained moisture exposure throughout Portland's wet season. We repair or replace damaged trim and re-flash all trim at roof intersections where needed.

For homes with James Hardie siding, we recommend replacing degraded wood trim with HardieTrim boards — a fiber cement trim product that will not rot, matches the siding's expansion characteristics, and outperforms painted wood trim in Portland's climate.

All trim repairs include back-priming all cut ends and proper caulk application at all joints and penetrations.

Downspout Installation and Routing

Downspouts must discharge a minimum of 6 feet from the foundation in most Portland jurisdictions — or connect to a French drain or dry well system. Downspouts that discharge directly at the foundation are a leading contributor to basement water intrusion and foundation moisture problems.

We install downspout extensions, buried drainage systems, and discharge points at correct distances from the structure as part of every gutter installation.

For homes with underground drain connections to the street or storm system, we can connect downspouts to the existing drain, or advise on the options if the existing drain is blocked or inadequate.

Why Gutter Sizing Matters in Portland's Climate

Portland's rainfall intensity during peak Pacific storm events can reach 0.5–1.0 inch per hour. A home with 2,000 square feet of roof catchment area generates over 1,000 gallons of runoff per hour during a heavy storm. Undersized gutters — which is most of the 5-inch sectional gutters on 1960s–1990s Portland homes — overflow at these intensities, directing water off the roofline onto the siding and into the soil immediately adjacent to the foundation. We size every gutter system to the actual catchment area and rainfall intensity of the Portland region, not to the minimum that will work on a dry day.

Signs Your Portland Home Needs New Gutters

Visible Structural Signs

Gutters pulling away from the fascia at multiple points — indicates either failed hangers or rotted fascia that can no longer hold attachment.

Visible sag in the gutter runs between hangers — standing water collects in the sag, accelerates corrosion, and overflows sideways rather than toward the downspout.

Rust staining or orange streaks on siding below the gutter — indicates rust developing inside the gutter or at joints.

Gutters with seam joints that have separated and been caulked multiple times — each recaulk buys 1–2 years; at some point, replacement is more cost-effective.

Water Management Signs

Water staining on the fascia board above or below the gutter line — indicates water running behind the gutter rather than through it.

Landscaping erosion or soil saturation directly below the roofline — water is overflowing or bypassing the gutters entirely.

Basement water intrusion or wet crawlspace that worsens during and after rain — often traceable to failed gutters discharging at the foundation.

Paint peeling on siding directly below gutter runs — indicates chronic overflow or dripping from failed gutter joints.

Soffit and Fascia Signs

Soft or spongy fascia boards — press with a thumb; a sound fascia board is firm. A soft board has moisture-compromised wood that will not hold gutter hangers.

Paint peeling on soffit panels in localized areas near the roofline — indicates moisture getting into the soffit cavity from above.

Visible wood rot at the soffit-fascia junction — extremely common on Portland homes with older gutters that have been overflowing for years.

Gutter Maintenance for Portland Homes

Portland homeowners who maintain their gutters consistently avoid the vast majority of fascia rot, foundation moisture, and siding damage we regularly repair on homes that deferred gutter maintenance for years. Here is the maintenance schedule that protects your investment.

What We Do — And Why It Matters
1
Late fall cleaning (November)
After the majority of deciduous leaves have dropped, typically mid to late November in Portland. Clear all debris from gutters and flush with water. Confirm all downspouts are clear and discharging correctly. This is the most important annual cleaning for Portland homes.
2
Spring cleaning (March–April)
After alder and maple seed release — significant in Portland. Clear accumulated debris from seed pods, pollen, and winter accumulation. Inspect all gutter joints and hanger attachments for any winter movement.
3
Downspout inspection
Run water from a hose into each downspout and confirm it flows freely at the outlet. A clogged downspout backs water up into the gutter and causes overflow at the closest joint — often directly at the fascia attachment.
4
Hanger inspection
Walk the perimeter and visually check that all gutter hangers are tight against the fascia. Any section of gutter pulling away by more than 1/4 inch should be re-secured promptly before the gap allows water behind the fascia.
5
Joint and caulk inspection
On sectional gutters (joints every 10 feet), inspect all lap joints and end caps for separation. Recaulk any joints showing a gap with a gutter-rated sealant. On seamless gutters, inspect the corner joints and downspout outlet collars.
6
Fascia condition check
While cleaning, press along the fascia board behind the gutter at several points. Any soft areas should be noted and assessed — soft fascia indicates moisture infiltration that will only worsen.
OUR FAQS

Gutter FAQs — Portland Homeowners

How much does gutter installation cost in Portland, OR?
Seamless aluminum gutter installation on a typical Portland home runs $1,200–$3,500 depending on linear footage, number of downspouts, and roof complexity. Homes requiring fascia replacement before gutter installation add $800–$2,500 for the fascia work. We provide a free written estimate after an on-site assessment.
What are seamless gutters, and why are they better?
+
Seamless gutters are formed on site from a continuous coil of aluminum, cut to the exact length of each run, with joints only at corners and downspout outlets. Sectional gutters have joints every 10 feet that are sealed with caulk, and those joints are where most leaks develop. Seamless gutters have far fewer leak points and perform better in Portland’s heavy rainfall environment.
My gutters are pulling away from the house. Can they be re-attached?
+
Sometimes. Gutters typically pull away because the hangers have failed or the fascia board has rotted. If the fascia is still solid, we re-attach the gutters using new hidden hanger brackets. If the fascia has rotted, it must be replaced before the gutters can be re-secured. We check the fascia condition during the estimate visit.
Should I put gutter guards on my gutters?
+
Gutter guards reduce maintenance frequency but do not eliminate cleaning entirely. Some designs can trap debris on top of the guard. For Portland homes surrounded by cedar, alder, or Douglas fir trees, micromesh guards are typically the most effective option and perform better than foam or screen guards commonly sold in stores.
How often should gutters be cleaned in Portland?
+
Homes with deciduous trees should typically be cleaned twice per year — once in late fall after leaves drop and again in spring after pollen and seed release. Homes surrounded by evergreen trees that shed needles year-round may require cleaning three to four times per year.
What size gutters do I need for my Portland home?
+
Most single-story Portland homes are well served by 5-inch K-style gutters. Homes with steep roof pitches, large roof areas draining to one gutter run, or exposures that receive strong Pacific storms may benefit from 6-inch gutters. Proper sizing depends on roof catchment area and slope.
Are gutter guards worth it in Portland?
+
For homes surrounded by Douglas fir or alder trees, micromesh gutter guards can significantly reduce the frequency of cleaning. Micromesh systems use a fine stainless steel mesh over an aluminum frame and generally perform better than foam inserts or reverse-curve guards.
How long does gutter installation take?
+
A standard seamless gutter replacement on a typical single-story home usually takes one full day. Two-story homes or houses with complex rooflines may take one and a half to two days. If fascia replacement is required before installation, additional time is needed.
Can I connect my downspouts to my French drain?
+
Yes. Connecting downspouts to a subsurface drainage system that routes water away from the foundation can be an excellent solution for homes on flat lots or properties with moisture issues. The drainage system should be inspected to ensure it has enough capacity to handle the additional water flow.
