Drywall Repair & Installation in Portland, OR
Patches That Match. Texture Matching. Water Damage Repair. Full Room Hang and Finish. Smooth or Textured Surfaces. Licensed OR #241979.
A drywall patch that doesn't match the surrounding texture is visible forever. Knockdown texture, orange peel, skip trowel, smooth — each requires a different application technique, and matching the sheen and pattern of existing texture is a skill that separates a professional finish from a DIY repair that homeowners regret. VResh Construction matches existing textures on patchwork and delivers full hang-and-finish work on remodeling projects to a level ready for paint.

Drywall Services We Offer
Drywall Patch and Repair
Holes from doorknobs, plumbing repairs, electrical work, water damage, or accidents — we patch and texture-match to the surrounding wall surface. Patch repairs involve cutting back to sound drywall, installing appropriate backing, hanging new drywall, taping, mudding with a minimum of three coats, sanding, and applying matching texture.
The texture-matching step is where most drywall patches fail aesthetically. We sample the existing texture, test the match on a scrap panel, and adjust before applying it to the wall. Different application guns, pressures, and mud consistencies produce different texture patterns. We have the equipment and experience to match Portland's most common textures.
Water Damage Drywall Repair
Water-damaged drywall — from roof leaks, plumbing failures, or window/door water infiltration — must be replaced, not dried in place. Wet drywall loses structural integrity and supports mold growth. But before replacing the drywall, we identify the moisture source and confirm it has been corrected.
We remove all water-damaged material, inspect the framing behind for mold and structural moisture damage, allow adequate dry-out time, and then install new drywall and finish.
For insurance claims involving sudden water damage: we document the extent of damage in writing before any removal, which is important for claim documentation.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal and Resurfacing
Popcorn ceilings — a textured ceiling finish common in Portland homes built between 1950 and 1990 — are frequently targeted for removal in renovation projects. Portland homes built before 1978 may have popcorn ceilings that contain asbestos — testing is required before any removal.
We remove popcorn texture, skim-coat the ceiling to a smooth finish, and prepare it for paint. For ceilings with extensive damage from prior water infiltration, we assess whether skim-coating or full-panel replacement is more appropriate.
Full Room and New Construction Drywall
For remodeling projects, room additions, garage conversions, and basement finishes, we hang and finish drywall for the full scope. This includes selecting appropriate drywall type (standard, moisture-resistant, fire-rated, or soundboard) for each application.
We finish to Level 4 or Level 5 as specified — most paint-ready applications require Level 4; Level 5 is appropriate for high-gloss paint applications or critical lighting conditions.
Drywall work is integrated with our trim and painting services — full room renovations can be completed with a single contractor rather than coordinating between separate trades.
Portland Residential Drywall Textures — Matching Guide
Knockdown Texture
The most common texture in Portland homes built from the 1970s through the 1990s. Applied by spraying a medium-consistency drywall mud in random splotches, then lightly "knocking down" the peaks with a trowel while still wet. The result is a low-relief random pattern with flat islands and subtle variation.
Matching knockdown requires the same mud consistency, the same nozzle and pressure, and the same knockdown timing as the original. We test match in an inconspicuous area before patching the visible surface.
Orange Peel Texture
A uniform fine-stipple texture applied by spray only — no knife work after application. Resembles the surface of an orange peel. Very common in 1980s–2000s Portland homes.
Orange peel is the most difficult texture to hand-apply convincingly. Proper spray equipment and pressure calibration are essential for a good match. A hand-applied orange peel patch is visible from across the room.
Skip Trowel Texture
A medium-weight hand-applied texture with flat, irregular patches and skip patterns created by angling the trowel. Each plasterer develops a slightly different pattern, making matching a skip trowel texture on an existing wall somewhat subjective.
We apply skip trowel test patches in an inconspicuous location and walk through the match with the homeowner before committing to the repair.
Smooth Finish
Smooth drywall (no texture) is the standard in newer construction and in high-design applications. Requires multiple coats of compound, careful feathering, and thorough sanding to achieve a surface that does not show texture under paint.
Level 4 finish is standard for most smooth painted walls. Level 5 (a thin skim coat over the entire surface) is used for critical gloss applications or where strong raking light will reveal any imperfection.
Matching smooth to existing smooth walls requires care — any slight difference in surface level between old and new drywall is visible under paint. We feather the transition zone carefully.
