About Battle Ground, WA — Clark County, Washington

Battle Ground is a city in north-central Clark County, Washington, named for an event that was less dramatic than it sounds. In November 1855, a group of Klickitat people led by Chief Umtuch left the Vancouver Barracks, and Captain William Strong was dispatched to retrieve them. The two groups made contact near the present-day downtown, spent the night camped near each other, and parted without a fight in the morning — though Chief Umtuch was later found shot, under disputed circumstances. The "battle" that never happened gave the city its name, and the story is still told with local pride.

  • Incorporated in 1951, Battle Ground remained a small agricultural community — known for dairy farming, cheese production, and its position as the social hub of north Clark County — well into the late twentieth century. That changed with growth. Battle Ground has grown more than 120% since 2000 and is now one of the fastest-growing communities in Clark County. The city serves as the commercial center for a north Clark County population of over 80,000 people, with major retailers, schools, and services clustered around the SR-502/SR-503 corridor. Clark County wine country has taken hold here as well, with three wineries and a tasting room operating within or adjacent to city limits.

The housing stock reflects Battle Ground's explosive growth era. Nearly 46% of all homes in the city were built after 2000, and the median construction year is approximately 2003 — making Battle Ground's housing stock among the newest in Clark County. The relatively small share of pre-1978 housing exists primarily in the older city core near Main Street and along the original platted blocks. The dominant construction era is the mid-1990s through 2010s, with newer master-planned subdivisions continuing to expand the city's southern and western edges.

What Working on a Battle Ground Home Actually Requires

Working in Washington State requires a current Washington State contractor registration — separate from Oregon licensing — along with familiarity with the Washington State Building Code. Battle Ground's housing stock is among the newest in Clark County — approximately 45.9% of homes were built after 2000, and under 2% predate 1940. Pre-1978 homes exist in the older city core near Main Street, but they represent a small share of total inventory. Lead paint compliance still applies to that older stock. Any contractor disturbing painted surfaces on a pre-1978 home in Battle Ground must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified. VResh holds both the required Washington State contractor registration and current EPA Lead-Safe Certification.

Lead Paint — Present in Most Pre-1978 Homes

Federal law — the EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule — requires contractors who disturb painted surfaces on homes built before 1978 to hold EPA Lead-Safe Certification, follow specific containment and work practice protocols, and provide written documentation. Violations can reach $37,500 per day per violation.

VResh Construction is EPA Lead-Safe Certified. We follow full RRP protocols on every pre-1978 project: proper containment, wet work practices to suppress dust, thorough cleanup procedures, and written compliance documentation at project completion. As VResh's own siding page notes: "Most Portland siding contractors are not" EPA RRP certified. Always ask any contractor to show their current certification before work on any pre-1978 home begins.

⚠️ Before Hiring Any Contractor for Pre-1978 Work in Battle Ground

Ask directly: "Are you currently EPA Lead-Safe Certified under the RRP Rule?" Then ask to see the certificate.

A contractor without current certification cannot legally disturb painted surfaces on a pre-1978 home, cannot provide the required compliance documentation, and exposes your family to lead dust contamination.

VResh Construction holds current EPA Lead-Safe Certification and provides written documentation on every qualifying project.

Moisture, Dry Rot, and Battle Ground's Housing Stock

Battle Ground's position in north Clark County, surrounded by forested ridges and farmland, means rainfall is consistent and sustained through the wet season. The newer construction that dominates the city's housing stock was generally built with modern moisture barriers and flashing details — but builder-grade execution varies widely, and homes from the mid-1990s through early 2000s are now approaching their first major window, siding, and roofing replacement cycle. Wood siding products from that era have shown high rates of failure at joints, trim interfaces, and bottom courses. Dry rot is increasingly common in older sections of the housing stock where original construction details are aging past their design life.

Building Permits in Battle Ground

Battle Ground is an incorporated city with its own Building Division. The Building Division is located at Battle Ground City Hall, 109 SW 1st Street, Suite 127, Battle Ground, WA 98604. Phone: 360-342-5040. Counter hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Online permit applications are submitted through the CSS (Customer Self-Service) portal; inspections are also scheduled via CSS 24/7 with a midnight cutoff for next-day scheduling. Electrical permits are obtained through Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) — not through the city. VResh handles the Battle Ground permit process, including coordination with WA State L&I for electrical work, on your behalf.

Do you serve Battle Ground, WA?
Yes. Battle Ground is approximately 30 miles north of Portland — about 10 miles north of Vancouver via SR-502. VResh serves the north Clark County corridor, and Battle Ground is a regular service area. Scheduling may take slightly longer than inner-metro locations, but all services are fully available. Estimate visits are typically available within 3–6 business days.
Is VResh licensed to work in Washington State?
+
Yes. VResh Construction holds an active Washington State contractor registration: WA #VRESHCL776ND, issued through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries. You can verify this registration at verify.lni.wa.gov. Always ask any contractor you hire for WA work to show their current WA registration before signing a contract.
My Battle Ground home was built before 1978 — what does that mean?
+
Homes built before 1978 are subject to the federal EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. While most Battle Ground homes are newer, the older housing stock near the city's historic core does include pre-1978 homes. VResh is EPA Lead-Safe Certified and completes all required documentation at project completion. Ask any contractor to show their current EPA RRP certification before signing a contract.
How do permits work in Battle Ground?
+
Battle Ground has its own Building Division at 109 SW 1st Street, Suite 127 (360-342-5040). Counter hours are Mon/Wed/Fri 9am–5pm and Tue/Thu 8am–1pm. Online permits and inspection scheduling use the CSS portal, with a midnight cutoff for next-day inspections. Electrical permits are through WA State L&I. VResh handles all permitting on your behalf.
Do you handle both interior and exterior work in Battle Ground?
+
Yes. VResh handles both exterior renovation (siding, windows, roofing, doors, dry rot, gutters, decks) and interior renovation (kitchen, bathroom, painting, drywall, trim, doors). One company, one warranty, one point of accountability. When dry rot found during exterior work requires opening interior walls to assess structural damage, VResh handles that continuity without the homeowner coordinating a separate contractor.
What discounts are available?
+
VResh offers a 10% discount on labor (up to $1,000) for active-duty and veteran military members — proof of service required. Homeowners 65 and older receive 5% off labor — just mention it when you call. A referral bonus is also available: refer a neighbor for a project over $5,000 and receive $250; over $15,000, receive $500. A spring special offers $500 off window or siding projects over $8,000 with a free moisture and dry rot inspection included.
What warranty does VResh offer?
+
All VResh projects include a workmanship warranty of 5 to 10 years, with the specific term stated in your written estimate. This covers defects in VResh's installation workmanship and is separate from manufacturer product warranties — James Hardie's 30-year limited warranty and Milgard's limited lifetime warranty, for example.
