Washougal's design loads sheet, the one-page document the city hands to anyone drawing a building here, gives two numbers that matter for a patio door, and one of them is a distance. The wind speed is 97 miles an hour, the same as Vancouver's. The distance is 1,500 feet: "For all structures within 1500 feet of the Columbia River, exposure 'C' shall be based on specific site location and conditions," and beyond it, Exposure B. The Gorge wind that Washougal is known for is weather; what the code does with the river is the exposure line. On the Washington side of the river, the Gorge has never been a code wind speed, and the state structural engineers' association's own wind study, written up in STRUCTURE magazine, says so. A sliding door is the largest piece of glass on most houses inside the line.
What the band does to a door
Exposure is the code's term for how much the ground around a house slows the wind before it reaches the house. Exposure B is a neighborhood of houses and trees. Exposure C is open ground, and the city puts everything within 1,500 feet of the Columbia in it, subject to the site, because the river is a flat, open runway for the wind. The residential code says a door is designed to the resulting loads, and the tables give them. An 8-foot patio slider has a rough opening of roughly 50 square feet. Outside the band, at the roof height of a two-story house, the code's number for a mid-wall door is the table's floor, about 10 pounds per square foot, and a little more at a corner. Inside the band, it is about 14 for most openings and more at a corner, where the wind pulls hardest.
A slider is bought against those numbers by its performance grade, the PG on the label, a grade built on the design pressure it was tested to. Outside the band, a PG15 door covers the opening. Inside it the order is a PG20 or PG25 door, and PG25 is the safer of the two. The differences in the product are the interlock where the panels meet, the reinforcement in the frame, and the height of the sill dam.
Water follows the pressure
The grade matters on a river lot because of water. A sliding door's water test rises with its grade, and on open ground the wind that drives rain at a door in a February storm is the wind the exposure category describes. A door graded for a sheltered street has a sill that will pass water sooner on the flats than its owner expects. So, on a Washougal estimate within the band, the grade is chosen with the storm in mind, and the sill and the interlock are the parts of the door that VResh is paying attention to.
Outside the band, on the hill, the code's number falls back to the floor, and a standard door covers it. The estimate indicates which side of the 1,500-foot mark the house is on. The measurement is from the river, and the sheet leaves a lot near the line to "specific site location and conditions," which is the building department's to settle.
