CertainTeed has been manufacturing roofing products for over 120 years. Their lineup for Portland homeowners runs from the widely-specified Landmark® PRO architectural shingle to the premium NorthGate® ClimateFlex® — engineered specifically for cold-weather installation and performance — and the luxury Grand Manor® and Presidential Shake® lines for historic and high-end applications. VResh handles the full CertainTeed installation: full tear-off to bare deck, deck inspection and repair, ice-and-water shield at vulnerable areas, new flashing at every penetration and wall junction, and correct installation per CertainTeed’s specifications.

Here’s what sets us apart: we don’t push any single brand. CertainTeed is an excellent product — particularly the NorthGate ClimateFlex® for Portland’s wet-season installation conditions and the Landmark PRO’s StreakFighter® protection for moss-prone Portland roofs. But if Malarkey’s rubberized asphalt or another product better fits your situation, Vlad will tell you that honestly. We install CertainTeed, Malarkey, Owens Corning, and other quality lines and have no incentive to push one over another.

The CertainTeed Lineup for Portland Homes

Landmark® PRO
Most Popular — Architectural, StreakFighter®
CertainTeed’s flagship architectural shingle and the most widely installed CertainTeed product in the Portland market. Dual-layer laminate construction, StreakFighter® algae resistance, Class A fire rating, and a 130 mph wind resistance rating when installed with compatible starter shingles and ridge accessories. Available in a wide color range.
Best for: Most Portland residential reroof applications where a quality architectural shingle with strong algae resistance is the priority.
NorthGate® ClimateFlex®
Class 4 Impact — Engineered for Cold-Weather Performance
CertainTeed’s impact-resistant architectural line is specifically engineered for cold-weather flexibility. The ClimateFlex® technology makes the shingle more pliable in low temperatures, reducing the cracking and brittleness that can occur during cold-weather installation or cold-season impacts. Class 4 impact rating — the highest available.
Best for: Portland homeowners who want Class 4 impact resistance with a shingle engineered for the Pacific Northwest’s cold-season installation and performance conditions.
Landmark® ClimateFlex®
Hail-Resistant with Cold-Weather Flexibility
The ClimateFlex® technology is applied to the standard Landmark architectural profile. Wood shake has a dimensional appearance, cold-weather flexibility, and strong impact resistance. A practical mid-tier option for Portland homeowners who want ClimateFlex performance at a price point below the NorthGate.
Best for: Budget-conscious Portland homeowners who want cold-weather flexibility and improved impact resistance without the full NorthGate premium.
Grand Manor®
Premium — Natural Slate Appearance, Class 4 Impact
CertainTeed’s luxury shingle line — a multi-layer, thick-cut architectural shingle with a natural slate visual profile. Class 4 impact rating, StreakFighter® algae resistance, Class A fire rating, and a distinctive heavy shadow line that creates significant roof depth and visual character.
Best for: Portland homeowners who want the appearance of natural slate with the durability and weight advantage of asphalt, particularly on Victorian, colonial revival, and high-end contemporary homes.
Presidential Shake®
Premium — Heavy Cedar Shake Profile
CertainTeed’s premium cedar shake profile shingle. Multi-layer construction with a thick, irregular shadow line that closely replicates the dimensional character of natural wood shake. Class A fire rating, StreakFighter® algae resistance, and strong wind resistance.
Best for: Portland Craftsman bungalows, Tudor revival homes, and any application where the cedar shake visual profile is architecturally appropriate and the homeowner wants asphalt’s durability without wood’s maintenance requirements.
Landmark® PRO Solaris®
Cool Roof — Energy-Efficient, Impact-Resistant
CertainTeed’s energy-efficient roofing line. Solaris® shingles use solar-reflective granules that reduce rooftop heat absorption — lowering attic temperatures and reducing cooling loads in Portland’s warm summers. Impact-resistant construction and StreakFighter® algae protection included.
Best for: Portland homeowners who want to reduce summer cooling costs and qualify for ENERGY STAR roofing credits, particularly on south- and west-facing roof planes.

CertainTeed Roofing Installation — What We Do and Why It Matters

#
Item
What We Do — And Why It Matters
1
Roof inspection and assessment
Inspect the existing roof from the exterior and attic. Assess deck condition, existing shingle layers, flashing at all penetrations, valleys, ridge, and eaves. CertainTeed's SureStart™ warranty requires installation over a clean, solid deck — we confirm deck condition before ordering materials.
2
Written estimate and product specification
Provide a written itemized estimate: tear-off, deck repair if needed, underlayment, ice-and-water shield, CertainTeed product and color, flashings, and labor. Specify the exact CertainTeed product line to be installed. No surprises on the final invoice.
3
Lead testing (pre-1978 homes)
Test painted surfaces that will be disturbed. Pre-1978 Portland homes frequently have lead-based paint on fascia, trim, and flashing. RRP compliance is standard on every VResh project involving older homes. Written documentation provided.
4
Full tear-off — all existing layers removed
Remove all existing roofing material down to the roof deck. VResh does not install shingles over existing shingles. Full tear-off is standard on every project — it is required for correct CertainTeed installation and for the SureStart™ warranty to apply.
5
Deck inspection and repair
Inspect the exposed deck for rot, delamination, soft spots, and inadequate fastening. Replace damaged sections. A solid, uniform deck is required for correct shingle installation and for the CertainTeed seal strip to engage across all courses.
6
Underlayment and ice-and-water shield
Install ice-and-water shield at eaves, valleys, and all other vulnerable areas per Oregon code and CertainTeed specifications. Install synthetic underlayment over the remaining deck area. CertainTeed's Grace Vycor™ products are used at critical areas where specified.
7
Drip edge installation
Install drip edge at eaves and rakes. Required by Oregon residential code and by CertainTeed installation specifications. Correctly installed drip edge prevents water from wicking behind the starter course and directs runoff away from the fascia.
8
Starter course
Install CertainTeed SwiftStart® or compatible starter shingles at eaves and rakes. Correct starter installation is required for wind resistance upgrade from 110 mph to 130 mph per CertainTeed specifications.
9
Flashing at all penetrations and wall junctions
Install new step flashing at wall junctions, pipe boots at penetrations, valley flashing in all valleys, and counter-flashing at chimneys. All original flashing is replaced — never reused on a new roof installation.
10
CertainTeed shingle installation
Install CertainTeed shingles from eave to ridge in staggered courses per manufacturer specifications. Four nails per shingle minimum in standard applications; six nails in high-wind or hip-and-ridge upgrade applications. Fastener placement within the nailing zone is required for wind warranty compliance.
11
Ridge cap, final inspection & cleanup
Install CertainTeed Shadow Ridge® or compatible ridge cap. Walk the full roof and inspect all courses, flashings, and ridge cap. Remove all debris. Walk through finished work with the homeowner and provide warranty documentation.

OUR FAQS

CertainTeed Roofing FAQs — Portland Homeowners

Is VResh Construction a CertainTeed certified contractor?
VResh is an independent licensed contractor — not a CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster™ or Master ShingleMaster™ certified contractor. We source and install CertainTeed shingles at competitive pricing, installing to manufacturer specifications. Note that CertainTeed's enhanced warranty tiers (SureStart™ Plus and beyond) require installation by a credentialed CertainTeed contractor. The standard SureStart™ and lifetime limited warranties apply to all VResh CertainTeed installations.
How much does a CertainTeed roof cost in Portland, OR?
+
A CertainTeed Landmark® PRO roof on a typical Portland home (2,000 sq ft) typically runs $9,000–$16,000 installed. NorthGate® ClimateFlex® runs $11,000–$18,000. Grand Manor® and Presidential Shake® run $14,000–$24,000+. All pricing includes full tear-off, deck repair as needed, underlayment, ice-and-water shield, flashing, and labor. Free written estimate after on-site assessment.
What is the difference between Landmark® PRO and NorthGate® ClimateFlex®?
+
Both are CertainTeed architectural shingles with StreakFighter® algae protection. The key differences are impact rating and cold-weather performance. Landmark PRO carries a Class 3 impact rating; NorthGate ClimateFlex carries a Class 4 rating (the highest available) and is engineered with ClimateFlex® technology for improved flexibility in cold temperatures. For Portland’s wet-season installation conditions and tree-canopy debris environment, the NorthGate is the stronger product.
What does StreakFighter® protection do?
+
StreakFighter® uses copper-containing granules in the shingle surface that inhibit algae growth by slowly releasing copper ions. Algae causes the dark black streaks common on aging Portland roofs — and is the precursor to moss establishment. CertainTeed's StreakFighter® carries a 25–30 year warranty against algae streaks, depending on the product line. For Portland's damp, shaded climate, this is the most practically important feature in CertainTeed's lineup.
Is CertainTeed or Malarkey better for Portland?
+
Both are strong products for Portland's climate, and the honest answer depends on your priorities. Malarkey has the edge on asphalt formulation — NEX® polymer-modified (rubberized) asphalt is more flexible and crack-resistant than standard asphalt. CertainTeed has the edge on cold-weather performance options (ClimateFlex®) and an established national warranty network. Both have strong algae protection. Vlad will give you a straight side-by-side based on your roof, budget, and situation at the estimate visit.
Do you install CertainTeed over existing shingles?
+
No. VResh does not install shingles over existing shingles. Full tear-off to bare deck is standard on every project. Layering new shingles over old adds weight, creates an uneven substrate, traps moisture, and is not compliant with CertainTeed's installation requirements for warranty coverage.
How long does a CertainTeed roof last in Portland?
+
CertainTeed Landmark® PRO and NorthGate shingles are warranted for the life of the structure for the original owner under the lifetime limited warranty. In Portland's climate, quality architectural asphalt shingles with StreakFighter® algae protection realistically last 25–35 years with minimal maintenance — longer than standard asphalt in Portland's sustained-moisture environment.
What is the SureStart™ warranty?
+
SureStart™ is CertainTeed's early-life defect coverage — it provides full replacement cost coverage for manufacturing defects during the first years of the roof's life (typically 10 years, depending on the product). After the SureStart™ period, the lifetime limited warranty covers defects on a prorated basis. SureStart™ coverage is the most relevant warranty protection for Portland homeowners — if a defect manifests in the first decade, the repair or replacement is fully covered.
