Malarkey Roofing Products was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1956 and manufactures shingles specifically engineered for Pacific Northwest conditions. Their NEX® polymer-modified (rubberized) asphalt formulation makes Malarkey shingles more flexible, more crack-resistant, and better-sealing around fasteners than standard asphalt shingles — a direct response to Portland’s temperature cycling and sustained moisture conditions. VResh handles the full Malarkey installation: full tear-off to bare deck, deck inspection and repair, code-compliant underlayment and ice-and-water shield, all-new flashing at every penetration and wall junction, and correct installation per Malarkey’s specifications.

Here’s what sets us apart: we don’t push any single brand. Malarkey is an excellent product — particularly for Portland homeowners who want the Scotchgard™ algae protection on the Legacy or Windsor line. But if your roof, budget, or situation points to a different product, Vlad will tell you that honestly. We install Malarkey, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, and other quality asphalt lines, and we have no incentive to push one over another.

The Malarkey Lineup for Portland Homes

Windsor® Scotchgard™
Highest Performing — Designer Cedar Shake Profile
Malarkey's premium product and their strongest shingle overall. The Windsor is a designer shingle — larger and appreciably thicker than the Legacy architectural line — with a cedar shake dimensional profile that produces significant roof shadow and visual depth. Class 4 impact rating (the highest available), Scotchgard™ protection for algae and moss resistance, and NEX® polymer-modified asphalt throughout.

Best for: Portland homeowners who want Malarkey's top-of-the-line product with maximum weather resistance, a dimensional cedar shake appearance, and the strongest available warranty.
Legacy® Scotchgard™
Highest Performing Architectural — Most Popular Premium
Malarkey's highest-performing architectural shingle. Slightly thicker than the Vista line, Class 4 impact rating, Scotchgard™ protection against algae streaking, and NEX® polymer-modified asphalt. The Legacy is the most commonly specified Malarkey product on Portland residential reroof projects — it delivers the full Malarkey technology stack in a standard architectural profile at a price point below the Windsor.

Best for: Portland homeowners who want Malarkey's best architectural shingle with Scotchgard™ algae protection and Class 4 impact resistance.
Vista® AR
Most Popular — Class 4 Impact, Algae-Resistant
Malarkey's most popular shingle overall. Slightly thicker than the Highlander, Class 4 impact rating (highest available — same as Legacy and Windsor), and algae-reducing granules. The Vista delivers Class 4 impact resistance at a more accessible price point than the Legacy, making it the practical choice for Portland homeowners who prioritize impact resistance and algae resistance without the full Scotchgard™ premium.

Best for: Portland homeowners who want Class 4 impact resistance and algae-reducing granules at a competitive price point.
Highlander® AR
Most Economical — Class 3 Impact, Algae Resistant
Malarkey's entry-level architectural shingle. Class 3 impact rating (second-highest available), algae-reducing granules, and NEX® polymer-modified asphalt — the Malarkey technology differentiators are present even at this price point. The Highlander is the most budget-accessible Malarkey option without sacrificing the rubberized asphalt formulation that distinguishes Malarkey from most competitors at this tier.

Best for: Budget-conscious Portland homeowners who want Malarkey's NEX® rubberized asphalt and algae resistance at the lowest available price point.

Malarkey Roofing Installation — What We Do and Why It Matters

#
Item
What We Do — And Why It Matters
1
Roof inspection and assessment
Inspect the existing roof from exterior and attic. Assess deck condition, existing shingle layers, flashing at all penetrations, valleys, ridge, eaves, and wall junctions. Malarkey warranties require installation over a clean, solid deck — we confirm deck condition before ordering materials.
2
Written estimate and product specification
Provide a written itemized estimate: tear-off, deck repair if needed, underlayment, Malarkey product and color selection, flashings, and labor. Specify the exact Malarkey product to be installed. No surprises on the final invoice.
3
Lead testing (pre-1978 homes)
Test painted surfaces that will be disturbed. Pre-1978 Portland homes frequently have lead-based paint on fascia, trim, and flashing. RRP compliance is standard on every VResh project involving older homes. Written documentation provided.
4
Full tear-off — all existing layers removed
Remove all existing roofing material down to the roof deck. Malarkey shingle warranties require installation over a single layer of new shingles on a clean deck — installing over existing shingles voids the warranty. VResh does not layer shingles. Full tear-off is standard on every project.
5
Deck inspection and repair
Inspect the exposed deck for rot, delamination, soft spots, and inadequate fastening. Replace damaged sections with new plywood or OSB. A solid, uniform deck is required for correct shingle installation and for the Malarkey seal-strip to engage correctly on all courses.
6
Underlayment installation
Install code-compliant synthetic underlayment over the full deck. Malarkey requires a minimum of 15# felt or approved synthetic underlayment. In valleys and at eaves, install ice-and-water shield per Oregon code requirements and Malarkey specifications.
7
Eave and edge metal
Install drip edge at eaves and rakes. Drip edge is required by Oregon residential code and by Malarkey installation specifications — it prevents water from wicking back under the starter course and directs runoff away from the fascia.
8
Starter course
Install starter strip shingles at the eaves and rakes. Starter strips provide the sealant bed for the first course of field shingles — without a correct starter course, the first shingle course cannot seal down and is vulnerable to wind uplift.
9
Flashing at all penetrations and wall junctions
Install new step flashing at all wall junctions, pipe boots at all penetrations, valley flashing in all valleys, and counter-flashing at chimneys. Malarkey shingles perform at their rated level only when the full flashing system is correctly installed. Original flashing is never reused.
10
Malarkey shingle installation
Install Malarkey shingles from eave to ridge in staggered courses per manufacturer specifications. Correct fastener placement (4 nails per shingle in standard applications, 6 nails in high-wind zones) and correct fastener positioning within the nailing zone are required for wind warranty compliance.
11
Ridge cap, final inspection & cleanup
Install Malarkey ridge cap shingles. Walk the full roof and inspect all courses, flashings, and ridge cap. Confirm that all penetrations are sealed and all courses are fully nailed. Remove all debris from the roof, gutters, and ground. Walk through finished work with the homeowner and provide warranty documentation.

OUR FAQS

Malarkey Roofing FAQs — Portland Homeowners

Is VResh Construction a Malarkey Certified Contractor?
VResh is an independent licensed contractor — not a Malarkey Certified Contractor. We source and install Malarkey shingles at competitive pricing, installing to manufacturer specifications. Note that Malarkey's enhanced warranty tiers (those beyond the standard limited lifetime warranty) require installation by a Malarkey Certified Contractor. If extended warranty coverage is a priority for your project, Vlad will advise on the options available through certified channels.
How much does a Malarkey roof cost in Portland, OR?
+
A Malarkey roof on a typical Portland home (2,000 sq ft) typically runs $10,000–$18,000 installed for the Legacy or Vista line, and $14,000–$22,000+ for Windsor. All pricing includes full tear-off, deck repair as needed, underlayment, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, new flashing, and labor. Free written estimate after on-site assessment.
What makes Malarkey shingles different from other asphalt shingles?
+
Three things. First, NEX® polymer-modified (rubberized) asphalt — more flexible, more adhesive, and more crack-resistant than standard oxidized asphalt. Second, Scotchgard™ protection on Legacy and Windsor — copper-ion algae resistance that is more durable than standard zinc-strip or surface-applied treatments. Third, Portland-area manufacturing — Malarkey's products are engineered for Pacific Northwest conditions.
Which Malarkey shingle is best for a Portland home?
+
For most Portland residential reroof projects, the Legacy® Scotchgard™ is the best balance of performance and cost — Class 4 impact resistance, Scotchgard™ algae protection, and NEX® rubberized asphalt at a price point below the Windsor. The Windsor is the right choice when the homeowner wants the highest-performing Malarkey product with a dimensional cedar shake profile. The Vista is appropriate when the budget is a constraint, but Class 4 impact resistance is still desired. Vlad will give you a straight recommendation for your specific roof at the estimate visit.
Does Malarkey offer a warranty for Portland homeowners?
+
Malarkey shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects for the original purchaser when installed to manufacturer specifications. Note: Malarkey's enhanced warranty tiers require installation by a Malarkey Certified Contractor. VResh is an independent licensed contractor. The standard limited lifetime warranty applies to all VResh Malarkey installations.
How long does a Malarkey roof last in Portland?
+
Malarkey Legacy and Windsor shingles are warrantied for the life of the structure for the original owner. In Portland's climate, quality architectural asphalt shingles with rubberized asphalt and algae protection realistically last 25–35 years with minimal maintenance — meaningfully longer than standard asphalt shingles in Portland's moss-prone, sustained-rain conditions.
Do you install Malarkey over existing shingles?
+
No. VResh does not install shingles over existing shingles. Full tear-off to bare deck is standard on every VResh roofing project. Layering new shingles over old adds weight, creates an uneven installation surface, traps moisture, and voids the Malarkey warranty. We start every project with a clean deck.
Does Malarkey roofing help with moss in Portland?
+
Yes — Malarkey's Scotchgard™-protected products (Legacy and Windsor) use copper-ion granules that inhibit moss and algae growth over time. This is the most effective passive moss-prevention technology available in asphalt shingles. It does not make the roof permanently moss-proof, but it significantly extends the period before treatment is needed compared to standard asphalt shingles in Portland's climate.
